The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament, edited by R.H. Charles (1913 edition), on CD-ROM is a collection of Jewish religious writings, mainly from the centuries leading up to the New Testament events. They are arguably the most important non-biblical documents for the historical and cultural background studies of popular religion in New Testament times. The early church writers made use of these documents, and the New Testament even quotes or alludes to a few of them. The Epistle of Jude, for example, contains allusions to the Assumption of Moses (Jude 9) and the 1st Book of Enoch (Jude 14-16)

Exegetes have long stressed the importance of genre study, the study of documents that share similar literary characteristics to the work being analyzed, in the work of the interpreter of scripture. Grant Osborne, in his work, The Hermeneutical Spiral states, "We must determine the genre or type of literature before interpretation can begin. The pastor will preach apocalyptic quite differently than poetry or narrative. ...we must study and proclaim each biblical genre differently, according to its own purposes and rules, lest we proclaim a message alien to the divine intention in the text" (p. 354).

The English translation of the three-volume Exegetisches Wörterbuch zum Neuen Testament, the Exegetical Dictionary of the New Testament - Libronix CD-ROM (EDNT) is a monumental work by an ecumenical group of scholars is first of all a complete English dictionary of New Testament Greek. Going beyond that, however EDNT also serves as a guide to the usage of every New Testament word in its various contexts, and it makes a significant contribution to New Testament exegesis and theology. EDNT's thorough, lengthy discussions of more significant words and its grouping of words related by root and meaning (with alphabetical cross-references) distinguish it from simpler Greek-English lexicons. Advancing the discussion of the Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, EDNT summarizes more recent treatments of numerous questions in New Testament study and takes into consideration newer viewpoints of linguistics.

A wealth of readable and reliable information. It will no doubt become an indispensible tool for the student of the New Testament as well as for the homiletician. —Princeton Seminary Bulletin

Why Should I Buy This Dictionary?

This 3-volume set all on CD-ROM appears all over the place on professors' bibliographies and lists of recommendations for exegetical study (e.g., Gordon-Conwell, Asbury Seminary, Loyola Marymount, and many others), often listed alongside TDNT. EDNT is included on the list of "The First 750 Books for an Expositor's Library" that every serious student of the Bible should own (the list appears in the book Rediscovering Expository Preaching). EDNT is clearly among the basic, essential books that every exegete should make it a priority to own and consult regularly.

Even if you already own other lexical reference works in Libronix DLS, EDNT fills a useful niche and makes a great companion to these other tools. It has been helpfully described as one part BDAG, one part Anchor Bible Dictionary, and one part TDNT. It isn't meant to replace any or all of those, but rather to be a convenient first stop (or quick stop) that combines lexical information, theological information and encyclopedic information.

Consider this example: if you look up σίναπι in BDAG, you'll learn that it means "mustard plant" and you'll be able to find where it occurs in the Bible, along with useful bibliographic information. But if you want theological comments on the parable of the mustard seed, you'd have to turn to TDNT. Look up σίναπι in EDNT, and you get both lexical information and theological observations in one place. This makes it a great first stop for the busy exegete, with the other lexicons supplying additional data to delve in deeper as time allows.

The Archibald Thomas Robertson’s Grammar of the Greek New Testament in the Light of Historical Research Libronix CD-ROM in the Light of Historical Research is one of the most exhaustive descriptions of New Testament Greek ever produced.

No reference grammar written in English since Robertson's covers NT Greek in as much detail. Thus, this grammar remains an important tool for the exegete, even though it is somewhat older and should be supplemented with modern grammars to take into account advances in the field.

Modern reference grammars (e.g., Blass-Debrunner-Funk’s A Greek Grammar of the New Testament and Early Christian Literature and Daniel Wallace’s Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics) and lexicons (e.g., Bauer-Danker-Arndt-Gingrich's A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature) often contain bibliographic references to Robertson’s discussions of important points.

In addition to making sure that the Logos Bible Software edition of Robertson’s Grammar links to many of the books that Robertson himself consulted, such as Burton’s Syntax of the Moods and Tenses of New Testament Greek and Deissmann’s Light from the Ancient East, many books previously published by Logos Bible Software have already been updated with links to Robertson’s Grammar. Just counting BDAG and BDF alone, more than 1,000 links to Robertson’s Grammar have already been tagged.

A.T. Robertson is also known for his well-loved study aid Word Pictures in the New Testament, which is available from Logos.

Colin E. Gunton was one of the most distinctive and influential voices in British theology. His works have been widely-acclaimed for their penetrating treatment of Christian doctrines (most notably that of the Trinity), and sharp criticism of modernity and its intellectual fallout. Throughout his many works, he maintains a commitment to classical Christian theology and a joyful enthusiasm for fruits of academic inquiry.

The Colin E. Gunton Theological Collection Libronix CD-ROM gathers much of this fruit together. Through these six volumes, Gunton’s keen intellect reflects upon such principal theological concerns as the Christian sacraments, Christology, faith, atonement, creation, and the church. The Trinity, as well, is given ample attention as Gunton meditates on these and other paramount issues in Christian doctrine.

Included also is The Theology of Reconciliation, a collection of essays edited by Gunton on the nature of reconciliation throughout several spheres of Christian life and belief. The volume features essays from leading theologians from America and Europe, and Gunton himself contributes the introduction and closing essay.

A Greek Grammar of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature Libronix CD-ROM - If the title of this grammar seems similar to another heavyweight tool for Greek study, it's no accident. In fact, Robert W. Funk consciously styled his translation of Blass-Debrunner's grammar after Bauer's Greek-English Lexicon, calling them "twin tools for the study of the language of the primitive church." And it's no exaggeration to say that A Greek Grammar of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature (BDF) is just as essential for serious study of the Greek New Testament as A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature (BDAG).

"[BDF] is at present the most authoritative NT Greek grammar." —Joseph A. Fitzmeyer, An Introductory Bibliography for the Study of Scripture

Logos Bible Software is pleased to announce the first-ever electronic edition of this indispensable reference work! It is the first advanced (reference) grammar for Greek to be made available on any Bible software platform. The electronic edition will include many features that add value far beyond the print edition and make it a first-rate addition to your digital library.

Beginning Biblical Hebrew Futato Libronix CD-ROM is a tremendous tool to teach yourselft Hebrew.

(This is an electronic product - pictured printed books are not for sale - all volumes are one one CD-ROM)

Mark D. Futato's new Hebrew grammar is a simple, thoughtful, and straightforward work that reflects genuine empathy for the beginning Hebrew student. The agenda of the book is to provide the fundamentals of the language unencumbered by information that may fog the road toward basic Hebrew competency. —Steven D. Mason, University of St. Andrews, Review of Biblical Literature June 2004

Achieving the right balance of amount of information, style of presentation, and depth of instruction in first-year grammars is no easy task. But Mark Futato has produced a grammar that, after years of testing in a number of institutions, will please many, with its concise, clear, and well-thought-out presentation of Biblical Hebrew.

Because the teaching of biblical languages is in decline in many seminaries and universities, Futato takes pains to measure the amount of information presented in each chapter in a way that makes the quantity digestible, without sacrificing information that is important to retain. The book includes exercises that are drawn largely from the Hebrew Bible itself.

"I just received my copy of Futato's Beginning Hebrew Grammar. This may be a disaster of the first rank. I can see it putting all Hebrew instructors out of work since it's so simple to teach yourself." —George F. Somsel, Logos user

The electronic edition of this title includes a number of helpful features that make it easier to use than the print edition.

All Bible references in the text are hotspots. Hovering the mouse over a Bible reference previews the referenced passage in your preferred Bible version; clicking the hotspot opens the Bible to that passage. The grammar can also be included in a Defined Collection with other reference titles that will be searched by Passage Guide. Passage Guide will then automatically locate any place in the grammar that cites your passage as an example. As Beginning Biblical Hebrew is cited by authors in reference works we publish in the future, those citations will be tagged as hotspots that immediately open up Futato's grammar to the right page and paragraph.

BDAG A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature Libronix CD-ROM is described as an "invaluable reference work" (Classical Philology) and "a tool indispensable for the study of early Christian literature" (Religious Studies Review) in its previous edition, this new updated American edition of Walter Bauer's Wörterbuch zu den Schriften des Neuen Testaments builds on its predecessor's staggering deposit of extraordinary erudition relating to Greek literature from all periods. Including entries for many more words, the new edition also lists more than 25,000 additional references to classical, intertestamental, Early Christian, and modern literature.

Perhaps the single most important lexical innovation of Danker's edition is its inclusion of extended definitions for Greek terms. For instance, a key meaning of episkopos was defined in the second American edition as overseer; Danker defines it as "one who has the responsibility of safeguarding or seeing to it that something is done in the correct way, guardian." Such extended definitions give a fuller sense of the word in question, which will help avoid both anachronisms and confusion among users of the lexicon who may not be native speakers of English.

Such enhancements to the print edition are exploited in the digital version to provide even greater benefits to students of the Bible. The BDAG search dialog is a software extra that adds unprecedented functionality to this already invaluable reference tool. It is a specialized search dialog that enables the user to refine a BDAG search by limiting it to specific fields within the text. This has the effect of narrowing the results that are returned, allowing the user to get better information more quickly.

This item works as a stand alone product and it will also fit seamlessly with any of your Logos Libronix and Series X titles!
